"Madinat Ghazza, che in Occidente chiamiamo Gaza City. Gaza City la colta, la città degli artisti, degli scrittori e degli insegnanti. La città dei bambini, dei resistenti e degli autostoppisti. Gli israeliani vendevano la benzina a prezzi esorbitanti, fecero entrare nel mercato anche gli egiziani che la vendevano allo stesso prezzo degli israeliani. Gli autostoppisti abbondavano tra le strade di Gaza City ma dopo pochi minuti di attesa ottenevano un passaggio perché per un palestinese, negare un passaggio in auto è un segno profondamente irrispettoso. Non era raro vedere un autista accostare il veicolo e spiegare all'autostoppista i motivi del suo rifiuto. Solo a Gaza potevi osservare un fenomeno unico al mondo: molte auto in circolazione erano piene di persone tra loro sconosciute. Capitava, inoltre, quando il traffico era intenso, di vedere passeggeri uscire lesti dall'auto per fare delle compere al volo per poi rientrare con le buste della spesa nell'auto ancora ferma in coda. I più temerari replicavano l'uscita rapida dall'auto per altre compere, con il rischio di perdere il passaggio e lasciare le buste della spesa in un auto di uno sconosciuto. Dicevo della città dei bambini. Andare a Gaza era come entrare in una scuola. Bambini, bambini ovunque. Dopo la scuola, dal pomeriggio fino a tarda sera le piazze si riempivano di bambini e di allegria. E poi, il quartiere storico di Shuja'iyya, il quartiere del popolo, il quartiere della Resistenza centenaria, dei duri e puri, il quartiere del "con l'invasore non si tratta, l'invasore si combatte". The Israelis sold gasoline at exorbitant prices; they also allowed Egyptians into the market, who sold it at the same price as the Israelis. Hitchhikers were plentiful along the streets of Gaza City, but after only a few minutes of waiting they would get a ride, because for a Palestinian, refusing someone a lift is considered deeply disrespectful.
It was not uncommon to see a driver pull over and explain to the hitchhiker the reasons for refusing. Only in Gaza could you observe a phenomenon unique in the world: many cars on the road were full of people who did not know one another. It also happened, when traffic was heavy, to see passengers quickly jump out of the car to make a quick purchase and then get back in with their shopping bags while the car was still stuck in the queue. The boldest would repeat the quick exit for more purchases, risking losing their ride and leaving their shopping bags in a stranger’s car.
I was talking about the city of children. Going to Gaza was like entering a school. Children, children everywhere. After school, from the afternoon until late evening, the squares filled with children and joy. In the Square of the Unknown Soldier, girls performed choreographed games and group dances; older youths played the guitar and other instruments; others played the inevitable football match among the stalls and the vendors of roasted corn.
And then the historic neighborhood of Shuja'iyya — the neighborhood of the people, the neighborhood of century-long resistance, of the tough and uncompromising, the neighborhood of “you don’t negotiate with the invader; you fight the invader.”
And the myriad of teachers. For centuries, Gaza has “exported” teachers throughout the Middle East. The dynasties of the oil regimes entrusted Palestinian teachers with the education of their children.
Gaza has forged the best people in the world. It has resisted British colonization, the Zionist military regime, the separation walls, the siege, hunger, and two years of bombardment on a territory the size of London’s Heathrow Airport. No people in the world would have survived; no people in the world would have stayed there, attached to their land in a single shared destiny.
Gaza has changed the course of human history. It has killed the myth of Western civilization; it has shown the world the fraud of its “values.” It has revealed the filth of media propaganda in all its squalor, which has created herds of unthinking racists ripe for manipulation. It has exposed the most depraved and miserable Western political class that history can remember.
Gaza has accelerated the decline of the West, which is now unstoppable — and that is not bad news. Whatever comes next can never be worse than this."
